The Orthopedic Residency Program is five years consisting of well-rounded didactics and clinical opportunities.
The residents train at South Pointe, as well as several affiliate hospitals. The resident gradually assumes increasing responsibility for patient care throughout the five year program. During the fourth year of the residency program, the resident spends the twelve month period on outside rotations such as, pediatric orthopedics, trauma, upper extremities and electives. Upon completion of our program, the resident will be able to evaluate and treat most orthopedic conditions.
Clinical training will cover general, as well as, subspecialty areas of orthopedics including:
- Foot / ankle
- Hand / upper extremities
- Pediatric orthopedics
- Adult reconstruction
- Orthopedic trauma
- Sports medicine
- Spine surgery
During the training year, the residents serve as team physicians for several local area high school athletic programs. The residents participate in all aspects of the care of athletes, including but not limited to:
- Pre-participation physicals
- Training
- Decision making regarding "return to play"
- Evaluation and treatment of injuries
- Rehabilitation
Residents are expected to maintain their BLS, ACLS and ATLS certification throughout the five years of training.
