Anesthesiology Residency Program Overview

Anesthesiology Residency Program Overview:

Anesthesia is one of the most exciting and promising fields of medicine for the young physician today. The practice of anesthesia combines areas such as clinical anesthesia, pain management and critical care. The practice of anesthesia has undergone many changes recently including more diversification, which allows anesthesiologists to focus on sub-specialty areas that interest them most. Our anesthesiology residency program prepares candidates for fellowship in the following areas:

  • Cardiothoracic surgery
  • Critical care
  • Neuro-anesthesia
  • Obstetrics
  • Pain management
  • Pediatrics
  • Regional anesthesia
  • Transplant surgery

The development of these sub-specialties further enhances opportunities for anesthesiologists and offers stability for the future, especially since job availability is the most promising aspects of anesthesiology.

South Pointe Hospital is a busy community hospital that features a 40 million dollar state-of-the art surgery center with a twenty-four bed critical care unit. Both areas house the most modern medical equipment available. An education center was also part of this recent addition. This provides our residents and medical students with access to a full service medical library, skills lab and multiple conference rooms for education, meetings and individual study.

The Department of Anesthesiology is committed to teaching and providing a comprehensive clinical anesthesia experience. The program will prepare you to deliver the best possible care to adults and pediatric patients in both the surgical suites and critical care areas. Our faculty are knowledgeable in the latest developments in anesthesia drugs and treatment modalities. The entire anesthesia staff is sincerely dedicated to education.

South Pointe Hospital Anesthesiology residents spend three years in house and during the third year of the program they are given the opportunity for outside rotations in:

Our residents are strongly encouraged to participate in a research project during their program years.

The residents are required to maintain their BLS, ACLS, ATLS and PALS certification throughout the entire four year program.
