Reducing Your Risk
There are stroke risk factors that you can control, such as, high blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes, and proper treatment of artery diseases. By eating healthy, exercising and not smoking, everyone can reduce their risk of stroke.
Symptoms
The American Stroke Association recommends that if you experience any of the following symptoms, call 9-1-1 or get to South Pointe Hospital immediately:
- Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body
- Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
- Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
- Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
- Sudden, severe headache with no known cause
10-second stroke test
Here's a quick test to give your family member or friend if you suspect he or she is having a stroke. Ask them to:
1. Smile as big a they can
2. Raise both arms up and hold them steady for 10 seconds
3. Repeat a simple phrase, "The sky is blue," for example
A crooked smile, weakness in one or both arms, and speech difficulties all may be signals of a stroke. If you notice any of these signs, get the person to the South Pointe Hospital Emergency Department right away.
