Weight Loss Surgery at South Pointe
South Pointe Hospital is pleased to offer a bariatric surgery program to the community. Bariatric surgery is a weight-loss surgery that can be a lifesaver to people who suffer from morbid obesity. Morbid obesity is defined as being at least 100 pounds over your ideal body weight, or having a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater (to calculate your BMI, click here).
Prior to undergoing bariatric surgery, patients at South Pointe undergo several months of education and counseling. Dr. Craig Eyman, a board-certified general surgeon, assesses each patient to design a plan for the surgery, nutritional assistance and recovery.
Dr. Eyman performs the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. In this procedure, two things occur:
1.) The size of the stomach is reduced permanently
- A small stomach pouch is created, filling quickly and giving a feeling of fullness much sooner. This makes patients eat less but still feel satisfied
2.) Malabsorption occurs
- The digestive system is rerouted so that fewer calories and nutrients can be absorbed by the body. Food is rerouted past a large part of the stomach and part of the small intestine, so calories and nutrients pass through without being absorbed
Advantages of bariatric surgery include:
- Significant weight loss
- Improved quality of life-health, social, personal and work
- Increased longevity
- Elimination of co-morbid conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, severe heartburn and sleep apnea
