Musculoskeletal Pain

Many adults suffer from musculoskeletal pain, usually back and neck pain, which can result from injuries or aging conditions such as: arthritis, bone spurs, disc problems, industrial accidents, osteoporosis, post-surgical pain, recurrent back injury, or sports-related injury.

Factors that contribute or compound musculoskeletal pain include poor posture, incorrect lifting and obesity.

Symptoms of musculoskeletal pain may include recurring or acute pain in the lower back; radiating pain in the legs and buttocks; numbness, tingling or burning in the legs or spasms or cramping of back muscles.

Once we determine the source(s) of your pain, treatment may include:

  • Acupuncture - the Chinese practice of the insertion of needles into specific body locations to relieve pain

  • Electrical nerve stimulation and pain suppressor devices - a method of applying controlled, low-voltage electricity to the body to relieve pain externally

  • Exercise therapy - muscle stretching and / or strengthening, and aerobics

  • Medical management

  • Nerve block by injection, freezing or radio frequency treatments - by injection and surgical procedures that interrupt nerve pain pathways

  • Tai chi - an ancient Chinese exercise practiced to improve health. The exercise consists of graceful and slow movements that relax and strengthen both body and mind.

  • Therapeutic massage

For patients who experience sever and incapacitating pain, which has not responded to standard treatments, we offer additional, more aggressive pain control methods including:

  • Implanted spinal cord and peripheral nerve stimulators - a surgically implanted device used to provide low-voltage electrical stimulation to the spinal cord to block the feeling of pain

  • Implanted medication pumps - surgically implanted pump is designed to deliver a controlled amount of medication through a catheter to a specific area in the body to relieve pain

See the available treatments section in the Pain Management Center for a comprehensive description of further treatment options.
